Anthony Cable/Coble/Goebel of Orange Co., NC September 3, 2011

There is a lot of confusion about the John and Anthony Cable/Cobles of Orange and Guilford Counties, North Carolina.

Much of this probably derives from German naming patterns.  Two naming patterns were very common.  First, for boys, the first son would be named for his father’s father, second for the mother’s father, third after the father.  Alternatively, the third son would be named for the father’s oldest brother and the fourth for the father.  As can be imagined, brothers living near each other could produce multiple sons of the same first and surname.  Also, it must be remembered that in early America the term Jr. was used to distinguish men of the same name, one older, the other his junior.

Some genealogists have pegged the Anthony and Anna Maria Coble of Guilford as the parents of Anthony of Rockcastle County, Kentucky.  The Anthony of Guilford was born in 1717 and his wife in 1723.  She would have been 55 when Anthony of Rockcastle [for this note, hereinafter called Anthony RC] was born in 1778 which would be highly unlikely.  Of her verifiable children, the last – David – was born in the 1760’s, leaving a long gap in childbearing.

Some genealogists have identified the Anthony Jr. of Orange County, North Carolina as the Anthony of Rockcastle.  These are two separate people.  Both Anthony RC and Anthony Jr. had children christened at Freidens Church in 1805.  Anthony RC and wife Barbara’s son Elias was born on the 15th of May while Anthony Jr. and wife Kara had a daughter born on the 1st of November.  Anthony Jr. was on the census lists at Orange County in 1820 while Anthony RC was on the census lists at the same time in Rockcastle County, Kentucky.  Both Anthony’s died about 1825 since Anthony Jr.’s estate is probate in Orange County and Anthony RC is no longer on the tax lists of RC after 1825.  The coincidence of death date undoubtedly adds to the confusion.

Benjamin Albright of Rockcastle Co., KY and Guilford Co., NC October 6, 2009

Who were the parents of Benjamin Albright?  Please contact me if you know or have clues.

BENJAMIN ALBRIGHT was born about 1790 in North Carolina, and died 25 June 1858 in Rockcastle County, Kentucky.  He married, first, Mary INGLE[1], possibly the daughter of Barnabas and Elizabeth (Richardson) Ingle of Orange County, North Carolina.  She probably died between 1827 and 1830 in Rockcastle County, Kentucky since she was not listed in the 1830 census there with her husband and family.  Her father’s will, dated 29 March 1827, gives property to his daughters (unnamed) with only daughter Sally’s share to go to her heirs.  This would indicate that Mary is still living.  The dispersal of his estate, dated 5 March 1831, gifts ‘Marey’ Albright’s heirs $233.38, indicating that she had died before that date.  Benjamin married, second, NANCY Van HOOK, daughter of Benjamin Van Hook, in Rockcastle County, Kentucky.  She was born about 1806 and died after 1880 in Rockcastle County, Kentucky.

Benjamin is a witness on a deed of 186 acres of land in Orange County, North Carolina on Little Alamance Creek to Daniel Albright from Thomas Cole on 1 January 1811[1a].  This would suggest that he was at least 21 at the time.  Benjamin is listed on the 1815 list of landowners (100 acres) at Alamance River in Ray’s Assessment for Guilford County and the 1820 U. S. Census at Guildford County, North Carolina.  By 1824 he is on the tax list at Rockcastle County, Kentucky.  Through 1830 he owns no land, but in 1831 he is on the (more…)
